  • Reid's Bagman, Jay Brown

Harry Reid's Connection to Bundy Ranch Siege
Harry: Money Mob and Influence => when Reid took money from Pimp Joe Conforte

    By Daxton Brown

NOTE: Because events regarding Reid corruption are breaking very fast, we are publishing early and then updating with time. Check back, this will be updated regularly. BRIBE JEOPARDY!! Sales of Harry fund ongoing research into Reid corruption (many leads to follow, some dangerous) and building a huge database of supporting documentation. Your support is needed and appreciated!

Does Harry Reid take Bribes? Given accusations that Rory Reid (Harry's son) illegally would benefit from Solar consulting for a Chinese firm, all involved in trying to run rancher Cliven Bundy off BLM grazing rights, whether Harry takes bribes becomes critically important in establishing a pattern of corruption linking to Rory and China.

Harry Reid claims in his autobiography "The Good Fight" that attorney Jay Brown is his best friend. Well this best friend pops up year after year in position to funnel bribes not only to Harry, but to Rory as well.

So the question before us is, does Harry Reid take bribes? The latest accusation comes from a complicated story from Utah by businessman Jeremy Johnson who says he made a down payment on a bribe to Harry Reid for favourable action regarding his business which was under investigation by the FTC. Well, who should show up in part of the Utah investigation subpoena as a middleman for such a bribe but none other than Jay Brown.

So deja vu all over again, Reid is once again linked to an "alleged" bribery scandal (I count 11 such incidents over the years, and that's just what is public!). This one involves Utah Attorney General John Swallow and indicted St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson, but it isn't the first one.

Tying everything together was the late Richard Rawle, a Provo, Utah, millionaire who built an empire of Check City locations, including more than 30 in Nevada. He was deeply involved in the federal lobbying campaigns and told Johnson he could use his clout with Reid to help end a Federal Trade Commission investigation into I Works, Johnsons company. All for the low, low price of $600,000 (act soon!)

Typical of I Works' products was one that purported to show consumers how to make money online using Google AdWords. Rawle, in a deathbed affidavit, and Swallow, his former employee, say the Johnson affair was a standard lobbying effort. But there have been many "lobbying efforts" involving Reid that all stink of kickbacks. The Utah story is a bit complicated, so for a more in depth understanding please read here: Reid denies connection to payday lender donor scandal

Here's the critical quote for us:

Before Rawle died of cancer, he signed an affidavit saying the money was for lobbying and that he kept $50,000 as a fee — $23,500 of which he used to pay Swallow for his help on a proposed Nevada cement plant.
Rawle spent $100,000, split evenly between two lobbyists: Jay Brown, a close friend of Reid, and Tim Rupli, a longtime lobbyist for the payday-lending trade group.
The group gave Brown a similar contract worth $240,000 annually in 2011.
Reid spokeswoman Kristen Orthman has repeatedly stated that her boss was not involved: "The allegations of bribery by Mr. Johnson, a man with a background of fraud, deception and corruption, are absurd and utterly false."

What a crack up, all of Reid's friends are involved in fraud, or better put are lawyers defending fraudsters, such as Jay Brown. So saying Jeremy Johnson is unbelievable is a cheap joke.

Yeah sure, bribery allegations are always false when they involve Reid. Here is the subpoena for information regarding everyone including Brown.

The group doing the Paycheck Lobbying spent the following through 2013.

From OpenSecrets.com we find the portion of Community Financial expenditures devoted to Jay Brown:
    Jay Brown
    payments from Community Financial
    2011$240,000
    2012$240,000
    2013$140,000
    Total$620,000

Clearly, Jay Brown was using his connections to Senator Reid to shake what turned out to be $620,000 in lobbying fees out of Community Financial. Jay Brown has no special expertise in Check Kiting, ooops I mean Check Cashing other than being bagman/consigliere to Harry Reid. His greed knew no bounds, what would it have hurt to get another $600,000 from Jeremy Johnson? (By the way, surprise, surprise, surprise, $600,000 is about what Jay Brown was paid). If this were the only accusation of Reid/Brown bribery, Reid would skate given his powerful position as Senate Majority Leader. Problem is there ARE SO GOD DAMN MANY bribe allegations over forty years. And at the center is usually found one good friend of Harry Reid, Jay Brown.

The following is excerpted and revised from a Chapter from my book, Harry: Money, Mob and Influence. This is only a fraction of what I have, so stop back regularly for more.

    Who Is Jay Brown

Critical to understanding any politician is knowing who he holds close. In Harry Reid's case, he obviously holds his family close, which is especially important because four of his sons and a son-in-law are lawyers with big-money influence. But nearly as close as a blood relative, is his longtime friend and business partner, lawyer Jay Brown.

If Senator Reid were to run a syndicate of his own making, he would obviously need a consigliere to manage the funds and give himself arms length deniability. If any person could fill that position, it would be long time friend Jay Brown. In fact, questions about how close Jay Brown is to the mob have been around since the late 70s when Reid was on the Gaming Commission. Just how close Brown is to Reid is given in an excerpt in The Good fight:

Did I know Jay Brown ? the investigators wanted to know. Jay was an old and dear friend, and our stories traced back to a time when I was in law school. Originally from Brooklyn, Jay was in school at USC when he and a friend drove up to Las Vegas for the night during spring break. They stayed out at the casinos till dawn and then decided to be tourists and drove out to the Hoover Dam for some sightseeing. Catching a nap in the passenger seat on the drive back to Vegas, Jay didn't notice that his friend had fallen asleep, too, and their car veered off the road, crashing into a light pole at full speed. Both men were rushed to the nearest hospital, St. Rose of Lima in Henderson. Jay was admitted with contusions and lacerations and his jaw broken in three places. He would need more than 100 stitches. His friend's injuries were far more serious. At the moment of impact, the steering wheel had slammed into his friend's chest cavity with such a force that it practically crushed every internal organ. The doctors could do nothing for him but administer painkillers and wait for him to die. Tending to the young man one of the nurses noticed a mezuzah on his chest. What does one do for a dying Jew in Henderson, Nevada? The hospital personnel traced his parents to New York City. When they reached Mr. Brown , he asked, "Are there any Jewish families in Henderson?" The hospital gave him Landra 's father's name, Earl Gould, and a phone number. Doc visited Jay in the hospital until the Browns arrived, and when they got to town, Doc and Ruth Gould put them up in their house while Jay recovered.

I was away at law school in Washington with Landra when my father-in-law wrote to us about his new friends, the Browns. The experience had touched him deeply. For three weeks, Jay lay in the hospital recovering from his injuries, and the Goulds visited him nearly every day. He would recover, graduate from USC on time, go to law school, and return to Vegas to clerk for federal judge Roger Foley for a year, and then he was hired by my law firm as an associate. I had not met him in person before then, but we became very good friends. In those years, he and his wife, Sharyn, would often socialize with Landra and me. Later, our children would all play together. Our two youngest children, key and David, were born within a few days of each other at sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. They have been inseparable friends since.

The Good Fight , Senator Harry Reid, page 260

It will be important to remember just how good a friend Harry Reid is with Jay Brown as we trace through the history of Las Vegas corruption in the following chapters. Among a short list of Jay Brown's more colorful clients have been casino skim impresario Lefty Rosenthal, the Tropicana Casino and Deil "Gus" Gustafson during the skim years, Rick Rizzolo of the Crazy Horse Too topless bar (convicted of racketeering), Michael Galardi (owner of Cheetahs topless bar who bribed Reid protégé Dario Herrera) and developer Jim Rhodes who gave Reid illegal contributions, all of whom ended up either blacklisted, in jail or bankrupt on dubious terms.

Harry Reid seems to have been able to keep blinders on to the peccadilloes of a number of friends and certainly Jay Brown has skirted with ethical lapses. So how did Jay Brown get to be so powerful?

In 1974, Gov. O'Callaghan was looking to hire a new finance chair, someone he could trust completely, and I recommended Jay for the job. He did stellar work, and it afforded him the opportunity to make contacts up and down the strip. A year after the election, Jay left my law firm to work with Oscar Goodman . He expanded his clientele to include casino workers owners and executives, and he also frequently represented their employees in matters before the Gaming Commission. As chairman, I made sure to keep that aspect of our relationship strictly professional, as I did with all of my friends. But the Browns and Reids spent a lot of time together, and we still do. Just because I was gaming commissioner did not mean that I had to dissolve my friendships.

The Good Fight , Harry Reid, page 260

In short, Brown became the intermediary bagman collecting political contributions from the strip casinos for Governor O'Callaghan and then later for Reid himself. Since Brown was also working for Goodman, who in turn represented the Tony "the Ant" Spilotro and the mob, Brown must have taken on the aura of a powerful insider when he showed up at casinos looking for contributions for the Governor. Don Williams, Reid's original political consultant, was there at the beginning but has a different interpretation of how events unfolded:

Harry called me up and asked, "What do you think about me using Jay Brown to pick up money for O'Callaghan?"

Mike O'Callaghan could make phone calls but because he had lost his leg in Korea, he couldn't pick up money at the casinos. Unbeknownst to the public, Mike was going through a bad time with his leg, I even visited him in the hospital and it was raw, so he really couldn't get around.

So Jay Brown was set up to make the legitimate collection of casino donations. But that makes you strong right away. He was considered Michael O'Callaghan 's' legitimate collection agent.

All Brown did was he picked up money.

But in terms of reputation, Brown became O'Callaghan's money man. Brown would brag he would do business in O'Callaghan's name for years after he was done as moneyman.

It was just that Mike didn't have anyone.

    Interview, Don Williams , 10-27-2009

So Reid had positioned his close friend Jay Brown from the very beginning to be the intermediary money collector in both Mike O'Callaghan's political affairs and eventually his own . One would therefore expect the 'bagman' for one of the most powerful politicians in the world to be squeaky clean, but Jay Brown has had many controversial dealings, both as an attorney and in his business affairs. Yet, like the cat that always lands on its feet, Brown always seems able to clean up his potential messes without consequences and avoid trouble, as was noted by the Review Journal:

    Partner of Reid survives troubles

    Lawyer's connections familiar with conflict

Las Vegas lawyer Jay Brown , a partner with Sen. Harry Reid in a lucrative but controversial local land deal, has a knack for getting embroiled in juicy conflicts but avoiding personal harm.

In a colorful Nevada law career that began in 1970, Brown 's clients are diverse. In the casino world, he has represented the Tropicana hotel and the Argent Corp.; in real estate, developer Jim Rhodes , Ambling Development Co., Concordia Homes and Spartan Properties.

The senator said he and Brown have been friends for more than 35 years.

The two met "when I was still in college, long before I was elected to any public office," Reid said. "We were introduced by my father-in-law when Jay was hospitalized as a result of a car accident, and we have been friends ever since."

Landra Reid's father was a Henderson chiropractor.

"I admire Jay's commitment to the well-being of our community," said Reid, the Senate minority leader.

Early in their careers, Brown and Reid also worked at the same law firm.

Brown joined Beckley Singleton Delanoy Jemison and Reid in the early 1970s. He left because the firm's core practice was trial work, while his focus was commercial law, lawyer Drake Delanoy said.

    Oct. 23, 2006, Las Vegas Review-Journal

    By JOAN WHITELY

No hesitation there, Harry Reid is an admiring good buddy of Jay Brown and continues to co-own fifty acres of land with him in Searchlight, Nevada. Brown has also over the years been extremely generous in donations to Reid's campaigns, to Reid's Searchlight Leadership Fund, in partnering with Reid's son-in-law Steve Barringer, and in partnering with Rory Reid and son-in-law Steve Barringer in the Table Mountain Indian Casino near Fresno. It can be safely said that the Brown and Reid families are joined at the hip - a point to be remembered as Brown's multiple dubious connections coalesce in the following chapters. The Review Journal article continues:

The current Brown controversy involves land in the southwest valley, which he and Reid bought in 1998.

Reid transferred his portion of the property in 2001 to a holding company controlled by Brown . It recently came to light, however, that Reid continued to claim the property as his own in financial disclosure statements.

When the company -- called Patrick Lane LLC, because the property is near Patrick Lane and Fort Apache Road -- sold the land in 2004, Reid received $1.1 million of the proceeds, for an investment of about $400,000. A shopping center occupies the site today.

Another land deal that made waves featured Brown as legal counsel rather than investor.

Representing developer Rhodes , he went with former Commissioner Kenny in 2003 to lobby Mark James , who was then a commissioner. They were seeking his support for a zoning change that would have allowed Rhodes to build higher density housing on private land that is in Red Rock Canyon but falls outside the Red Rock National Conservation Area. But James , who had been Rhodes ' attorney, eventually came out against the rezoning.

"Ms. Kenny cautioned me that developers could be 'dangerous' if you crossed them," is how James described the meeting with Brown and Kenny in an affidavit in response to a lawsuit by Rhodes , which alleged a conflict of interest.

    The lawsuit failed.

James did not respond to recent Review-Journal requests for comment about Brown .

    Oct. 23, 2006, Las Vegas Review-Journal

    By JOAN WHITELY

Unreported million dollar profits from land deals for a sitting Senate majority leader would seem to be newsworthy, as well as associations with bribe-taking and convicted former County Commissioner Erin Kenny who was trying to strong-arm Commissioner James. But Brown himself never seems to be available for comment and his ethical hedges never seem to result in consequences. For example, in 2000 his wife's business concession problems at McCarran Airport magically disappear:

AIRPORT CONCESSION SCANDAL: Federal lawsuit tentatively dropped<
Former applicant backs away from accusing officials

A federal lawsuit that had the potential to discredit two Clark County commissioners and resurrect memories of a 3-year-old airport concession scandal was tentatively dropped Tuesday.
Ayalas Inc., an unsuccessful applicant for a gourmet coffee concession at the county's McCarran International Airport, agreed to drop a lawsuit that accused Commissioners Dario Herrera and Yvonne Atkinson Gates of inappropriately lobbying concession and airport officials so that a political ally could land the lucrative coffee shop.
"That's good news," Herrera said when told about the case Tuesday. "First of all, I have spoken with Brian Ayala. We have had conversations about this, and he has apologized."
County regulations forbid elected officials from interfering with the selection of an airport concessionaire under the federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program, which is intended to provide business opportunities primarily for minorities and women.
The lawsuit alleges Herrera and Atkinson Gates inappropriately pulled strings on behalf of the successful applicant, SB Specialities, a company owned by Sharyn Brown, wife of Jay Brown, friend and campaign fund-raiser for Democratic U.S. Sen. Harry Reid.
Wednesday, December 13, 2000, Las Vegas Review-Journal By FRANK GEARY

In hindsight, this episode from 2000 is most interesting because Dario Herrera soon after ends up going to jail on bribery charges relating to Cheetahs topless bar owner Michael Galardi (who Brown also at times represents). Of course Dario Herrera was Harry Reid's chosen candidate to run for Congress in 2002, with Reid's son, Rory, replacing Herrera in his Clark County Commission seat. And the first lawyers to represent Herrera were Oscar Goodman's son and Jay Brown's son. So much smoke, but according to Harry Reid there never seems to be a fire - only the little guys get caught.

Later, Brown ends up being the object of testimony at the G-Sting trials, which also seems to lead nowhere. When former Brown client Galardi confesses to his multiple acts of bribery at trial, he mentions that he had Brown attempt to give County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates $50,000 for favorable decisions on topless bar zoning.

WITNESS : FBI agent Christopher Byers

    BYERS: PROPOSED ORDINANCES 'DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE'

Working on behalf of Galardi , Kenny feverishly worked on an ordinance that would allow nude dancers in strip clubs that serve alcohol. At the same time, Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates was working on an amended code that would force strippers to perform on stages 6 feet away from patrons.

Galardi hired well-known attorney and lobbyist Jay Brown to talk Atkinson Gates into backing off her proposal and offered him up to $50,000 if he was successful. Galardi also suggested paying Atkinson Gates $100,000 to drop her ordinance.

"I don't get this bitch, man," Galardi said of Atkinson Gates during a Nov. 11, 2002, phone call.

"We're flippin' going to go after her like nobody's business," Malone responded.

Bribery Trial Recap , Las Vegas Review-Journal Apr. 02, 2006

All in all, these are fine examples of Jay Brown, the community servant and friend of the Senate Majority Leader. Being a friend of bribe taking politicians and corrupt land developers however seems to have left Brown with the need for a cleaner hobby - representing strip joint operators.

    ADVOCATE FOR STRIP JOINTS

Another interesting side to Jay Brown's career is that alone and in coordination with law partners such as Oscar Goodman he has acted as resident agent and lawyer to numerous topless bar owners:

  • Joe Conforte (skipped to Brazil on IRS and bribery charges)
  • Jack Gordon and Terry Gordon (pornsters and penny arcade bribes, represented with Goodman)
  • Rick Rizzolo of Crazy Horse Too (Rizzolo convicted and jailed on various charges)
  • Mike Galardi of Cheetahs (convicted on bribery charges)
  • The Eliades family at Sapphires
  • Déjà Vu (mobile stripper pole for the Strip)
  • Prive' (nightclub re-obtained liquor license after excessive nudity and infractions)

Given Harry Reid's reputation as a clean living Mormon, it seems odd that his long time friend, political moneyman and business partner would be acting as agent for some of the roughest elements of the Las Vegas porn trade. Especially amusing was Brown's 2009 representation of the Déjà Vu nude club in its attempt to run a Plexiglas advertising bus complete with a stripper pole up and down Las Vegas Blvd.

Figure 2 Photo by Leila Navidi

" Kay," a dancer from Deja Vu Showgirls, does some pole dancing moves while inside a truck to advertise the Deja Vu Showgirls and Little Darlings clubs on the Las Vegas Strip late in the evening

Clubs want to be 'good citizen,' so stripper-mobile ends its run

The stripper-mobile won't be the talk of the town - or the nation - much longer.

Las Vegas attorney Jay Brown , who represents Little Darlings and Déjà Vu strip clubs, said the controversial Strip run of the U-Haul-like truck outfitted with Plexiglas walls to showcase clothed strippers is over.

"My client has authorized me to make it clear that due to concerns of County Commissioners Chris Giunchigliani and Steve Sisolak, and because my client wants to be a good citizen, effective immediately that truck is offline," Brown said Friday afternoon.

Monday, Nov. 9, 2009. Las Vegas Review Journal, By Joe Schoenmann

In stressful times like these it is important to know the number one buddy of the Senate Majority leader of the most powerful country in the world is protecting the best interests of the Mobile Stripper business, keeping them in good standing in Sin City. It was also important for Brown to help reopen the Prive lounge at Planet Hollywood, apparently to (as Harry Reid put it) honor Brown's "commitment to the well being of our community".

Las Vegas Clubs Get Slapped For Bad Behavior

It was "Prive-gate" that truly rattled the town's after-dark scene.

In July, when Planet Hollywood agreed to the $500,000 fine, which Prive' partly paid, the casino also admitted to a lengthy list of violations: At Prive, patrons were involved in drugs and brawls, and minors were served alcohol. Some club-goers were hospitalized after drinking too much. Police calls to Planet Hollywood soared, and authorities noted "significant prostitution activity" near the club.

"The conduct is going to happen," said state Gaming Commission Chairman Peter C. Bernhard at a recent commission meeting. But he added: "I think that Planet Hollywood failed in this case in meeting its responsibilities."

Planet Hollywood agreed to monitor Prive more closely and retooled the club's lease so it can be more easily terminated if problems resurface. If regulators cite Planet Hollywood for similar infractions before next August, the casino must pay an additional $250,000.

A Planet Hollywood attorney did not return calls, and Vanessa Menkes, a spokeswoman for the Opium Group, which runs Prive, declined to comment.

Clark County yanked Prive's liquor licenses in late July. New accusations began to fly. A former security director said managers told him to curb the number of African American patrons on weekends, according to documents obtained by Las Vegas Weekly. In response, a Prive representative told the Weekly that the security director had been fired for cause and the club was "without knowledge" of the documents.

The club did not address the allegations.

Prive attorney Jay Brown told the Clark County Commission during recent hearings that by replacing certain employees and operating under the close watch of multiple agencies, the club had quelled its troubles. It agreed to give authorities unrestricted access; turn over its records, including security logs; and keep patrons out of back areas and off dance poles, where some have flashed too much skin.

Commissioners wagged their fingers but in the end allowed the venue to regain its liquor licenses -- temporarily.

By Ashley Powers, The Los Angeles Times

Of course, many will argue - who cares? How does legal representation of tawdry porn clubs by the best friend of the Senate Majority Leader of the United States affect the national interest? Well, it does suggest a level of hypocritical crony business associations that may influence other parts of the Reid political empire. It also speaks to where the campaign money collected by Jay Brown, who has been a money collector and bundler for Reid since the 70s and a large contributor, comes from - the old adage 'Follow the Money' comes to mind. Remember too that campaign manager Don Williams swears Joe Conforte (the Mustang Ranch pimp now on the lamb in Brazil) provided campaign money before Brown's arrival on the scene - so one wonders whether Reid has a pattern of taking donations from those on the seamier side of Nevada's political influence industry?

    CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS

Brown's campaign contributions to Harry Reid, Rory Reid and the Senator's Searchlight Leadership Fund have been generous, to say the least. Reviewing Brown's donations to national campaigns over the years, it appears Brown is extremely active in senatorial campaigns and with politicians who would support Harry Reid's agenda (especially at the senatorial level). There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, other than it seems to suggest Brown is a subsidiary to Reid's ambitions and still acts as a campaign bagman. The following list of contributions is not outrageous for a wealthy individual, but it does not include local campaigns, money from co-workers, money before 1986, and other bundled money. In short, Jay Brown is a whale in funding Harry Reid's political empire - this is a rich man's hobby.

    REPRESENTING THE MOB

Memories of Brown's abilities as a lawyer vary. Lefty Rosenthal, the infamous mob client who Brown helped represent with law partner Oscar Goodman during Lefty's appearances before the Gaming Commission in the early 80s, had a jaundiced view of Brown's abilities:

The hearing room was packed, standing room only. The gamers sat behind a long desk and the hearing began. My attorney was Oscar Goodman . He rose to address the &@#%$&# that were leaning comfortably back in their chairs. I wasn't comfortable or confident in spite of the fact that I had met with a dime store attorney named Jay Brown who was considered to be politically well connected and an associate of my attorney Oscar Goodman. Jay Brown assured me that above all I would receive a fair and impartial hearing in the unlikely event that one would be ordered.

That promise was one of my main considerations before accepting the conditions and expenses associated with the Detroit team of investigators. "Fair and Square Frank, you have my word that." That was Jay Brown then.

Within moments, one of the commissioners on the board made a motion, guilty as charged. "Do I have a second for the motion?" He did! They took the vote. They were unanimous, GUILTY, hearing concluded. We were never given an opportunity to call any witnesses or introduce sworn testimony that would have supported our position. The "Good Old Boys" hung one more on me and taught me a few lessons. Oh yes, I cursed the &@#%$&#, one by one. However the ball game was over, Home cooking wins again.

One lesson, if I need a friend I'll buy a dog! As for Jay Brown , he never returned my calls and continues to practice his style of bullshit. If I sound bitter, I apologize, I'm really not. Time heals most wounds.

Of course, Lefty Rosenthal was never considered a paragon of virtue and though he apparently became an informer for the Feds, his opinions are suspect. However, Lefty's statement: "Jay Brown who was considered to be politically well connected", when translated means Lefty was counting on Brown's close friendship to Gaming Chairman Harry Reid to get him off the hook. While Brown obviously didn't save Rosenthal from inclusion in the Black Book, Lefty's remark implies Harry Reid was at least perceived to be someone who could be bought. Over the years, conceivably it was Jay Brown and Oscar Goodman who left that impression.

Later we will see how Jay Brown was part and parcel of events at the Tropicana Hotel in the late 70s and 80s when the casino was being skimmed by Joe Agosto along with shady businessman Deil Gustafson for boss Nicky Civella and the Kansas City mob. But some history of the modern Vegas mob is needed to put it all in perspective.

There exists in a vault somewhere an FBI report regarding the activities of Jay Brown, who was representing Gustafson and Agosto and therefore mob interests, and his best buddy, Gaming Commissioner Harry Reid and whether the two colluded. It is in the interest of all Americans that that report be found and published.
    NOTES:

Three of Harry Reid's best friends are Jay Brown, Dominic Gentile and Oscar Goodman. All mob and titty bar lawyers.

Dominic Gentile even owns the Palomino and was the inspiration for The King Of Clubs strip club reality show on playboy. Here's the funny thing, Dominic Gentile represents Harvey Whittemore, the lobbyist/lawyeer convicted of giving illegal campaign bribes to Reid. Go figure. Gentile also represented lowest of the low mafia tittybar owner Rick Rizzolo of Crazy Horse II.

Dominic has also been used by Reid for partisan witch hunts, notably on Republican Brian Krolicki. Yup, Reid's friends are true mafia, not to be taken lightly.

Harry isn't like hardscrabble ranchers like the Bundys, he's better. He's better than all of us. He lives at the Ritz

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's connections to money, mob and influence in Nevada going back fifty years (fourth edition). Revelations from Reid's first campaign manager and others paints a picture of a politician taking money on the side. Most shocking is the polygraph backed claim that Harry Reid took unreported donations from pimp Joe Conforte of the Mustang Ranch brothel in the years leading up to Reid's time on the Nevada Gaming Commission. Conforte's links to mob figures like Jimmy 'the Weasel' Fratianno and Johnny Simone mean the mob knew Reid was on the take. Also disturbing are accounts of Reid's long friendship with a lawyer to many of the most notorious strip clubs in Las Vegas - some of whose owners just did jail time for bribery and were Reid's political proteges. Oscar Goodman, Las Vegas Mayor and lawyer to the mob also enters the picture. Sweetheart treatment of land developers, the G-Sting scandal, fat cat campaign contributors and more taint the record of Senator Reid, one of the most powerful politicians in the U.S. and therefore the world.

I am the author of Harry: Money Mob And Influence. Here's some background on how Reid runs Nevada.

In the Sharron Angle vs Reid debate on October 14th, 2010 Angle asked Senator Reid how he was able to accumulate so much wealth on a politicians salary. One would suppose that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is a fairly important person and many in the media would already have answers to this question. However, other than his self-serving autobiography, the only biography of Reid is the one I have written, titled HARRY, Money Mob & Influence In Harry Reid's Nevada. The absence of reporting on Reid's background is the usual slurry of bias, laziness and incompetence that we have come to expect from our press, so I became his reluctant biographer to fill the void.

Doing a book report on myself, either I have fabricated a salacious expose from whole-cloth and Harry Reid is an absolute Saint, or he is among the most corrupt whorehouse politicians the U.S. has ever faced (and I use whorehouse literally, not figuratively) taking money from every mark he could find. Everything I have researched about Harry Mason Reid points to such massive corruption that if only a small percentage of what I and others have unearthed is true, Senator Reid makes Charlie Rangel look like a choirboy.

The money shot is that in the early 90s I had worked with a gentleman named Don Williams, a well known and respected (sometimes feared) Democratic political consultant in Nevada who had run Harry Reid's early campaigns from 1965 (Hospital board) through 1968 (State Assembly), 1970 (Lieutenant Governor) and finally a defeat in 1974 for Senate against Senator Paul Laxalt. When I started to write my book on Reid in the middle of 2009, I of course immediately called Don and asked if he had any stories about Reid. Don had a haymaker:

I was in Reno during the (1970) Lt Governor's race and Harry called and said to go down to the River House (casino), and see Joe Conforte. I was interested in Conforte, because at that time he was bringing in S an Francisco pollsters during the elections. He hired polling outfits, which was pretty unusual considering he was a well known pimp. We were able to get one big poll. I had run races where pollsters made lots money off us, but Conforte's polls were better. Conforte looks like a Damon Runyon pimp. We hit it off pretty well. George Knapp (Channel 8 Reporter) did a report on him recently down in Brazil, Conforte doesn't look like he's aged at all.

Well Conforte says to me, "I want you give this to Harry Reid." And he hands me a big fat envelope. One time Conforte took me to this double-wide trailer. It was pretty opulent and attached by a secret door to the Mustang Ranch Conforte had a whole wall of huge paper shopping bags with money sitting there and had me help count it out. Conforte also took me out to his car one time and showed me a whole trunk full of absentee ballots filled out for Harry. He actually offered me the opportunity to open the ballots to check them if I wanted, but I didn't want my fingerprints on there. So, you could say Harry Reid's campaign was partially oiled by the sweat of Mustang Ranch whores. Interview, Don Williams, 10-27-2009

Don Williams has since been polygraphed on his statements and I no longer consider them in dispute. The excruciating problem is that if Reid was taking money from pimp Conforte (who it is well documented bribed a flotilla of Nevada politicians over decades), it means Reid's entire career was compromised, especially starting with Reid's tenure as Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission starting in 1977. In the popular media culture, that would imply that in the movie Casino, Deniro/Ace/Lefty Rosenthal really did give money and perhaps more to Dickey Smothers/Harry Reid. It would also imply that in real life at the Tropicana casino skim, Joe Agosto, the bagman for the Civella crime family, really did have a "Cleanface in his pocket".

Taking unreported money from pimps is explosive enough, but perhaps just old news from 35 years ago. Except as I continued to research I found a thread of examples of bribery that extend to the present and also include influence by denizens of the "Adult" Entertainment Industry, as well as vestiges of the mob right out of the movie Casino. Strikingly similar to Conforte's well documented penchant for bribing politicians in the 70s and 80s is the G-Sting scandal of 2003, where two Reid protégés (County Commissioners Erin Kenny, and Dario Herrera) took bribes from topless bar owners. G-Sting gives us an end cap to forty years of influence peddling, however, there are thirty chapters of events in my book detailing crony land deals, sleazy associations and intimidation which link back all the way to the pimp Conforte days. My research, and that of another author finishing eleven years of his own research on a book on Conforte, are still going strong and are headed towards a further dirtying of the Reid record.

The Conforte accusations would be old events if Harry Reid hadn't based much of his federal elective career on having been the guy who faced down the mob during his appointed stint as Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission from 1977 to 1981. Could Conforte and his mob associates have had a hold on Reid during the 80s too? First be aware that pimp Joe Conforte had spent a great deal of money and effort bribing everyone under the sun to get prostitution legalized in Nevada in 1971. The number of bribed politicians is substantial, and admitted both by Conforte in a 2008 Interview with I-Team reporter George Knapp in Brazil, as well as being documented by numerous indictments and news stories beyond this articles' scope. Conforte also claimed in a 1983 DOJ testimony to have bribed popular governor Mike O'Callaghan:

In the early 1970's, Gino Del Carlo was a County Commissioner in Storey County, Nevada. In or around 1972, Del Carlo died. Since the Governor of the state had the authority to fill the term of a County Commissioner, [Conforte] wanted to be sure the Governor appointed a person who would be in favor of prostitution. [Conforte] asked Claiborne to contact Governor Mike O'Callaghan and request that O'Callaghan appoint Laura Del Carlo, wife of Gino Del Carlo, as the interim replacement.

[Conforte] was confident that O'Callaghan would make the appointment of Laura Del Carlo for him. [Conforte] explained that in 1970, he had "donated" to O'Callaghan's race in the primary. He had donated $5,000 initially, and in September, 1970, gave another $1,000 to O'Callaghan's wife to pay some miscellaneous bills. Towards the end of the year, he donated another $7,000 to $8,000 for O'Callaghan's campaign.

[Conforte] advised [blank] was a witness to the payments made to O'Callaghan's campaign. [Conforte] explained that the first $5,000 was paid to O'Callaghan at [blank]. He believe the future payments were given to O'Callaghan's campaign manager.

O'Callaghan did, in fact, appoint [Laura Del Carlo] to the County Commission. Department of Justice Interview With Joe Conforte, 1983 from internal Memo, as supplied by correspondence with Oscar Dey Williams, author of the book Conforte due for release in 2011.

Federal Judge Harry Claiborne, mentioned above and also a friend of Harry Reid, was impeached for taking money and prostitutes as bribes from Conforte. Governor O'Callaghan was Reid's mentor, first as high school teacher and boxing coach to eventually appointing Reid to the Gaming Commission in 1977 after Reid's failed Senate race against Paul Laxalt. Moreover, the late Pete Echeverria, who chaired the Nevada Gaming Commission before Reid, was also a former lawyer to Joe Conforte during a catch-all tax evasion trial in 1963 (really pandering and intimidation). Plus we have Don Williams polygraphed statement that he picked up money from Conforte for Reid on two campaigns. In short, we aren't arguing whether my history of Reid corruption is plausible, only whether it is 100% accurate and despite all the evidence Reid somehow miraculously remained a Saint amongst the corrupt.

My conjecture is that Reid was juiced into the Gaming Commission Chairmanship by Joe Conforte. What is little understood is that Joe Conforte, along with a mob associate named John Simone and possibly Jimmy "the Weasel" Fratianno, had delusions that they could get licensed as casino operators as late as 1976. Simone and Conforte had met in 1974 at the Canyon Country Club Hotel in Palm Springs to discuss building a casino, and Conforte had followed through by buying 300 some odd acres near Sparks Nevada (which also devolved into a Commissioner being bribed, a common theme). According to an article by Mike Oliva in the March 21st, 1976 Nevada State Journal:

Conforte also denied knowing any of the figures with whom police say he met in Palm Springs.

"Hey, I don't have anything to do with these Mafias," the brothel operator said . "Everybody always wants to say I'm with the Mafias I'm not a Mafia".

However, Conforte did say he'd like to see his hillside property across from the golf course site turn into a casino center.

"There's nothing I'd like better than to see five hotels the size of the MGM Grand on that hillside," he said. "There'd be nothing better for the community, ''

Despite the protestations of innocence from a multiply convicted pimp, one can hypothesize that Harry Reid was juiced into the appointive Chairmanship of the Nevada Gaming Commission in 1977 specifically so he could help get Joe Conforte and others a casino license. Some might call that a slander, but if Don Williams' polygraphed statement is correct about picking up money from Conforte for Reid, then the entire Harry Reid mythic story collapses in doubt. Certainly, Reid overlooked other dubious gaming application during his Commission tenure, notably at the Aladdin with entertainer Wayne Newton and also when the hundreds of pages of FBI files on the mob connections of Frank Sinatra were ignored when Sinatra came before the gaming commission.

Also potentially significant is that Reid's long time good friend, Lawyer Jay Brown, was helping represent mob crooks Joe Agosto and Deil Gustafson at the Tropicana skim in the late 70s and 80s while best friend Reid was on the Commission. Reid claims his friendship with Brown was never abused and he was never influenced, though that isn't what notorious Lefty Rosenthal thought when he commented on his view of Brown's defense capabilities.

One lesson, if I need a friend I'll buy a dog! As for Jay Brown, he never returned my calls and continues to practice his style of bullshit. If I sound bitter, I apologize, I'm really not. Time heals most wounds. Feature Story: State Gamers Petition Supreme Court (Desert Rats 3) Posted by Frank Rosenthal on January 22, 1999

Lefty's disappointment in Jay Brown was most likely because Brown and partner mob lawyer Oscar Goodman had implied their friendship with Harry Reid would save the day. While Lefty did end up in the Black Book, it is never clear what motivated the mob at that point in time because Jimmy "the Weasel" Fratianno was squealing, Frank "the Bomp" Bompensiero had been executed for being a rat, and Tony "the Ant" Spilotro was under FBI pressure. So we just don't know whether Reid was on the take while his best friend was representing mobsters, or whether there is a tooth fairy. However, a critical casino owner from that period tells me "everyone knew Reid was on the take".

Reid has often claimed through the years that he has not abused Lawyer to Lawyer firewalls, especially the one he has with friend Jay Brown. For example, in 2009 supposedly Reid never contacted lawyer/nude bar owner Dominic Gentile when State Attorney General Catherine Cortes Mastos was contemplating offering Gentile $425,000 to prosecute Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki on later dismissed and unfounded embezzlement charges ("coincidentally" Krolicky was then the presumptive opponent for Reid's Senate seat). Then there are the land deals. In 2002 there were the reports of the suspicious Patrick Lane deal in partnership with ubiquitous friend Jay Brown where $750,00 was hidden in a game of ownership musical chairs. Then there is the 250 acres of Reid's Searchlight land (55 acres co-owned with Jay Brown) that was being jockeyed into position to be a potentially $50 million development with shady builder Jim Rhodes (the four lane improved highway to Searchlight goes right by Reid's land). Then there are the shenanigans involving the Coyote Springs development of lawyer/friend Harvey Whittemore where Reid moved mountains to obtain transmission line and desert tortoise rights – now defunct the land is being repositioned for largess from a solar plant operator. Currently there is the Anderson Dairy scandal where dairyman (with real cows) and Republican member of the State Assembly Ed Goedart was forced to ship milk to California, then ship California milk back to Nevada while Reid supporter Andersen Dairy is given a waiver.

Then there is Reid's saving jobs at the City Center megaresort complex. Reid strong-armed money from banks to finish the project, supposedly to save jobs. In reality, Reid succeeded in bailing out long time friend and top contributor Kirk Kerkorian and the MGM as well as partner Dubai World and notorious Pansy Ho. Reid could have saved multiple other projects in the Vegas Valley, but chose his friends.

In a September 15th townhall meeting in the Summerlin community in Las Vegas, there was a surrogate debate between Sig Rogich (who now heads Republicans for Reid and stood in for Reid) and Richard Ziser (who ran against Reid in 2004 and stood in for Sharron Angle). I asked Mr. Rogich directly if he thought Don Williams was a liar about Reid's connections to Conforte. Rogich replied that he had called Williams recently and that they simply had different recollections of events and these were in any case old events. Most telling, Mr. Rogich refused to commit Senator Reid to taking a polygraph to clear his name. Of course Rogich wasn't there at the Conforte payoffs, so couldn't know their validity. Clearly, once on the corruption rollercoaster a politician can't really get off, so lobbyist Rogich's contention that this was something from the distant past is strictly wishful spin.

Sadly, Rogich himself is part of a quid pro quo with Reid regarding something called the DesertXpress high-speed rail where Rogich stands to reap huge rewards during the building of a high speed rail from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Immediately after Reid endorsed the DesertXpress over the rival Maglev technology, Rogich started the Republicans for Reid PAC. Laughably, the DesertXpress technology is so inferior that it would dead-end in Victorville unable to overcome the grade at the Cajon Pass to Los Angeles.

I could go on and on, and indeed I have in a book which continues to grow (it is published through Amazon.com with just-in-time printing technology, so I can update the edition regularly). But here is the truly disturbing part, as an author I have at least ten story lines that I can't even go into because they take the form of Reid getting a kickback from X, but the source is afraid to talk publicly. Is it fair as an author to drop hints that a subject (even a politician) is even dirtier than you can say, and then not divulge sources on record? It certainly is not fair, but neither is the way Harry Reid conducts his intimidation campaigns in Nevada. These aren't nice people, they are thug leftovers from the movie Casino.

People can judge for themselves, read my book and then see if Harry Reid is willing to take a polygraph that he never took money from Joe Conforte. Either Harry Reid is oblivious to fifty years of corruption, or he is part of all of it. Either scenario should give Nevada voters and American's in general the absolute Halloween willies.
